New South Wales is home to the largest electricity market in Australia, serving 3 million homes and 350,000 businesses. Electricity distributors in New South Wales are owned by the government.

The New South Wales government, along with IPART, set price maximums on electricity price plans each year to regulate how much consumers can be charged. An electricity distributor can charge below or above these set prices through market contracts, although this occurs very rarely.

Most energy retailers in New South Wales will use regulated prices in their standard pricing structure and then offer additional discounts on bills in order to attract customers.

The New South Wales electricity market is divided up into three electricity distributors:

1. Ausgrid
2. Endeavour Energy
3. Essential Energy

These companies are responsible for reading meters, maintaining power lines, and fixing faults. Based on each distributor, each household will have a different tariff and a different rate structure depending upon the electricity meter used. Each distributor may charge different rates for each meter, which could fluctuate from 2% to 10%.
